Leeds City Council is consulting on possible changes to street lighting provision in the City. The Council currently spends around £4m a year on electricity for street lights. The possible options to reduce this amount include increasing the areas where street lights are switched off between midnight and 5.30am and upgrading street lights to LED ones which would use less than half the amount of electricity as the current type, or a combination of both approaches.
Increasing the number of areas with reduced operation of street lights may have the effect of making those areas feel less safe. Replacing all of the street lights (most of which still have many years of operational life remaining as they were all upgraded within the last 10 years) with LED ones would cost a substantial amount of money which would take about 10 years of electricity savings to repay and so could involve increases to Council Tax or reductions on other services provided by the Council.
The consultation can be found here and runs until 26 January 2018. If you would like more details, please sign up using the form on this site and contact us on [email protected] and we can put you in touch with someone who can help.
