Councillor Billy Flynn was re-elected by the voters of Adel & Wharfedale with 2952 votes at the election on 2 May 2019. He gained more than 1700 votes more than the next best candidate. Congratulations to him for this recognition of all the hard work he has put into his duties to all those living in his Ward. Billy said on his election victory:
"I am absolutely delighted to have been re-elected as the ward councillor for Adel & Wharfedale and would to thank everyone who voted for me and also to express my gratitude to the many people
who supported my campaign over the last six weeks or so by canvassing, delivering leaflets and helping me in many ways. It was a funny old election with all the Brexit chaos in Westminster and
very difficult to read locally until the count started. However, residents obviously voted on my record in the ward and I am extremely grateful for that. I will continue to work hard for everyone living in Adel & Wharfedale."
Elsewhere in Leeds North West the results of our other candidates, Stewart Harper (Otley & Yeadon), Angelo Basu (Weetwood) and Steve Rowley (Headingley & Hyde Park), were somewhat disappointing although perhaps understandable in the wider national context. However, despite the results, what was very encouraging was the great response from local members and supporters in helping to ensure that for the first time in many years we were able to conduct active campaigns in these wards and gained several new activists. Although this has not immediately translated into votes, it has meant that we were able to distribute election materials to all households in Otley & Yeadon and to more than twice as many households in Weetwood than we have managed at a local election in at least a decade. All three candidates would like to give their deep thanks to those who helped in this effort.
The Association is planning on building on this initial work to campaign around the year and hopefully to increase support across the Wards which do not yet have the benefit of a Conservative councillor so that we can make an improved showing at the 2020 local elections there and to support Cllr Caroline Anderson in her campaign to be re-elected in Adel & Wharfedale.
We will be having a BBQ in the next few weeks to thank all the activists who helped out around Leeds North West and will contact members once a date for that has been fixed. If you would like to attend or to get involved in our future activities, please email [email protected] .
