Since local members elected Stewart Harper to be our Conservative candidate in August, we have been very busy campaigning throughout Leeds North West. Rather too busy for us to have updated this site in a while!
Before the General Election was called in Parliament in October, teams of volunteers, members and activists had completed extensive canvassing in Cookridge, Adel and Otley. We spoke to thousands of local residents to ask what their priorities were. Regardless of how they voted in the 2016 Referendum, the most mentioned issue on the doorstep was the need to Get Brexit Done. Many former Labour and Liberal Democrat voters have said to us that they cannot bear the idea of having Jeremy Corbyn as our Prime Minister. People who voted for the Brexit Party at the European Elections overwhelmingly realise that only by voting for Stewart here can they help to ensure that the UK leaves the EU.
Now that we are in the middle of the full General Election campaign, teams of local supporters are out most days of the week helping to get our message across that the Conservatives can win in Leeds NW. Some in previous elections voted for the Liberal Democrats in order to keep Labour out. That clearly was not effective in 2017. The Liberal Democrats are no longer represented by Greg Mulholland, who lived in the area. They know that they will not win a majority in this election so they are planning on supporting Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister. The only way to ensure we avoid the disaster of Corbyn leading the country and Brexit being further dithered over and delayed, possibly even cancelled entirely, is to vote Conservative here.
The photo above is of our campaigning session in Headingley last weekend. Our President, Gerard Francis (on the right hand side of the picture), who has been a member of the Party here for over 50 years as well as a former mayor of Otley, remarked that this was the largest contingent of Conservatives out campaigning in Headingley that he can remember, including the many years when this seat had a Conservative MP with a large majority.
On Saturday 23rd November, we will have an even larger group campaigning in Otley. If you would like to get involved in any way in the campaign to elect Stewart Harper to be the first Conservative MP for Leeds NW in over 20 years, please do get in touch using the contact details on this site and we can add you to our mailing list giving details of all our planned activity for the coming week (email [email protected]). Please do also visit Stewart's own site at http://www.stewartharper.org.uk where you can find out more about Stewart.
